New Puzzle Piece $19 Android Tablet for Children with Autism

Within the past month, a new tablet was released specifically for children who have autism. Puzzle Piece is a new Android Tablet that was created so that every family, no matter what their budget, can afford a tablet to help their autistic child grow and learn.

The Puzzle Piece tablet is a 7-inch Android tablet that offers a subscription to 10 new educational apps per month for children with autism. The tablet is offered for $19 and the app subscription is just $19 a month and can be canceled at any time without penalties.

Puzzle Piece co-founder Andrea Macken is a board-certified behavior analyst (BCBA); she chats with families through the Puzzle Piece online community three times a week. The online community also helps families connect with other families who also have children with autism.

With this new tablet, Puzzle Piece hopes to ensure that technology and education is available for all autistic children, no matter the income level of their families. Many families cannot afford to have their children see professional therapists and behavior analysts as often as is recommended; the games that come with Puzzle Piece are supposed to “mimic the kind of interaction and work” that autistic children perform when working with therapists.

The apps use “character-based stories” to help children learn about social interaction skills and deal with difficult situations. Puzzle Piece is working on a program that would offer 20 new apps per month that are customized to the child’s needs. The apps use a correction and reward system. Children who complete a story are rewarded with games for their tablets.

This is great news for families who are looking for an affordable way to help their child learn, without paying loads of money for professional help, a traditional tablet that costs hundreds of dollars, or a subscription that requires a contract.
